or humorous point. Political cartoons have their own particular style of humor which is based on a certain blending of serious topics and humor. Political satire has been used as an effective means of criticizing the establishment.
The first political cartoon appeared in Ben Franklin's newspaper The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. It appeared as part of an editorial by Franklin commenting on 'the present disunited state of the British Colonies.' The woodcut drawing entitled 'Join or Die' pictures a divided snake in eight pieces representing as many colonial governments. The drawing was based on the popular superstition that a snake that had been cut in two would come to life if the pieces were joined before sunset. The drawing immediately caught the public's fancy and was reproduced in other newspapers. http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyamerica/firsts/cartoon/http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyamerica/firsts/cartoon/

During Abraham Lincoln's campagin, the following political cartoon ran in the local newspapers that depicted him as a lazy man with no concerns.
A few from the 2012 election!
I do like the usage of Cartoons to depict whats going on in the political arena. I like when they poke fun at each other, it makes great comedy even though politics is not a laughing matter and should be taken seriously.
ReplyDeleteGreat collection of political cartoons. Political cartoons tend to bring focus to particular political topics. The 2012 cartoons reflect the current campaign dead on. It's interesting to know that cartoons have been making a point with a twist for a long time.
ReplyDeleteYour cartoons are very funny this is what the candidates are really doing to each others, only they are no physical punches.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of political cartoons and all the political satire they bring to the public. It’s interesting to see how the political cartoons have changed over time from simple drawings that make you think to more advanced ones that don’t try to hide their subtle meanings. The back story on the join or die cartoon was one I did not know about with the snake coming to life. It will be interesting to see what comes next in the future of political cartoons.
